A Mikvé resembles a small cistern. The water reaches chest height, and usually has room for three or four people. Steps at the edge facilitate access. A closer look will allow us to discover in one of the walls, just below the water level, a small hole with a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeters. This detail, however insignificant it may seem, nevertheless gives the bath the status of Mikvé. In this same hole, on the other side of the wall, we can still notice a fixed container that accumulates rainwater, in a cistern or "bor", a fundamental part of the Mikvé. This cistern, "bor", is a small container that receives rainwater to carry it to the bath in a natural way. It must be dug directly into the ground, and must contain at least 40 "sea". It is a biblical measure equivalent to about eighteen liters of water. The Miké should therefore contain approximately 760 liters of water. The "bor" itself could be used as Mikvé, but as it becomes difficult to change the water, it will serve as a "source" for a second compartment or cistern, filled with running water that will be used for immersions, whatever condition they are in. connected to each other by an opening of at least five centimeters.

What is Mikwa for?

Jewish law requires that Mikvé be used in three main circumstances :

1. After menstruation, a woman can only have sex with her husband on condition that she has been immersed in a Mikvé. This is the most important law of family purity.

2. Immersion in a Mikvé is part of the process of converting to Judaism.

3. Kitchen utensils manufactured by non-Jews, must be "converted" by immersion in a Mikvé.

4. Some are in the habit of immersing themselves in the Mikvé before Yom Kippur, as a sign of repentance and purification. (Águas do Edem, Arrié Kaplan).

Family Purity

Mikvé allows the fulfillment of one of the most important obligations of the Torah, that of family purity.

Hafets Hayim Rabbi Israel Meir Ha Cohen, the great Ashquenazi authority in the early twentieth century, specified that it is even more important to build a Mikvé than a synagogue: to pray, we can always gather anywhere, in a room, a hotel, or even someone's home. Family purity, however, is an irreplaceable element when we live the Jewish life. In the absence of a Mikvé, the couple continually violates a prohibition as serious as that of eating during Yom Kippur, since both are sanctioned by the punishment of "Karet", without which there is a rupture with the source of souls . Children born in this type of condition will be marked down to their soul, and an article in Guemara intends to even include them in the "Mamzer" category.

It is explained, in general, that the fact of penetrating the pure water of the Mikvé, the water, this primary element, corresponds to a return to the source, and therefore allows to remove the Impurities that reign among men after certain behaviors and certain contacts with impurity.


Mikvé must be built with permission, only and exclusively under the guidance and agreement of the Rabbinato do Rio de Janeiro

The validity of a Mikvé is entirely under the responsibility of the Chief Rabbi in charge of the community (Yore Deha, Darketchuva). As a result, anyone who has not been built under the full responsibility of the Chief Rabbi will not be Casher. (The only Mikvé Casher in the city of Rio de Janeiro is located at Rua Anita Garibaldi, in Copacabana). Of course, if it is built without the permission of the Chief Rabbi, it has no validity under the law of Judaism. "There are things that find their sustenance in the heights of the universe, but that are taken without due importance." Talmud Beharot, 6b.

When building a Mikvé without the authorization and guidance of the Rabbinate, not only for public use but also for residential use, the Mikvé becomes invalid. In other words, for a woman who intends to apply the laws of family purity, bathing in a Mikvé that has not been built under the guidance of the Chief Rabbi leads to nothing. As long as Mikvé is not Casher, immersion is not Casher. Therefore, its use is prohibited.

It is very serious to supervise the construction of a Mikvé when not authorized. It is not just a usurpation. The consequences, which Gd forbid, are very serious. The Nidda woman who bathes in such a "Mikvé" is not allowed for her husband. The verdict given by the New York Orthodox Rabbinic court, pronounced the strict ban of other Rabbis to meddle in Rabbinic matters, which are within the purview of Rabbi Blumenfeld.
